Wes Streeting has criticized Wireless festival organizers for their decision to feature Kanye West, stating that they should feel ashamed. The Home Office is reviewing whether Kanye West, also known as Ye, should be allowed entry into the UK due to his past antisemitic remarks. Despite this scrutiny, he is scheduled to perform at the London music festival for three nights in July.

Health Secretary Mr. Streeting expressed his dismay at West’s actions and accused him of using his bipolar disorder as an excuse. Festival Republic, the festival’s promoter, defended their choice to include West in the lineup, citing his legal right to perform in the country. However, there have been calls to prohibit him from entering the UK because of his history of antisemitism.

In response to questions about barring West from the country, Mr. Streeting refrained from influencing the Home Office’s decision but criticized the festival’s decision to have West headline the event. He highlighted West’s controversial behavior, including releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” and using his mental health condition as justification, followed by what he termed as a half-hearted apology.

Mr. Streeting emphasized the seriousness of antisemitism and the responsibility that public figures like Kanye West carry in combating it. He expressed disappointment in the festival organizers for not recognizing this responsibility.

West has expressed willingness to meet with the British Jewish community before his Wireless show as a part of his efforts to address past antisemitic comments. Despite this, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has voiced concerns over West’s participation, leading major sponsors like Diageo and Pepsi to withdraw their support for the festival.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has faced pressure to prevent West from entering the UK, with critics arguing that his presence would not be in the public interest. Festival Republic’s managing director, Melvin Benn, defended West’s inclusion in the event, emphasizing Ye’s right to perform and dismissing claims that the festival provides a platform for his controversial views.

The Wireless Festival is set to take place in London’s Finsbury Park in July, with West headlining all three nights. Ticket sales for the event are scheduled to begin soon.
