A court revealed that a teenager’s online friend on Snapchat, who initially appeared friendly and caring, turned out to be a nightmare for parents, as he was sentenced to jail. Benjamin Mitchell, aged 19, manipulated his victim through Snapchat, coercing her into sending explicit videos of herself. Shockingly, he confessed to having thoughts of using cable ties on children.

The victim testified that Mitchell was fully aware of his actions, acknowledging their wrongfulness but proceeding regardless, showing a complete disregard for others. Mitchell initiated an online relationship with a 15-year-old girl he met on Snapchat, engaging in explicit exchanges over several months, causing distress to the girl.

The girl eventually disclosed the abuse to her mother and friends in December. The mother expressed deep shock and disgust at Mitchell’s actions, labeling them as abhorrent and every parent’s worst fear. The victim described Mitchell as manipulative, taking advantage of her struggles with mental health.

Police discovered indecent images on Mitchell’s phone, including pictures of young girls. Mitchell admitted to his attraction to children and a compulsive behavior towards indecent images. His criminal history revealed a previous conviction related to possessing indecent images.

During sentencing, Mitchell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including engaging in inappropriate communication with a minor and possessing indecent images. The judge referenced disturbing disclosures made by Mitchell, highlighting his dangerous obsession with children and weapons. Mitchell was sentenced to four years in prison with an additional three-year extended license period.

The judge emphasized the severe impact of Mitchell’s actions on the victim, noting the emotional manipulation and grooming for sexual purposes. Despite Mitchell’s conditions, the judge held him fully responsible for his actions and their consequences. Mitchell must serve a significant portion of his sentence before being considered for parole, in addition to being subject to strict prevention orders and registration as a sex offender for life.
