In a recent discussion, a travel specialist highlighted some hidden gem coastal destinations in the UK that offer a peaceful alternative to the bustling scenes in Cornwall.
Cornwall is renowned for its popularity as a seaside hotspot in the UK, boasting expansive golden beaches, excellent surfing opportunities, a vibrant culinary scene, and picturesque towns like St Ives and Falmouth. The region attracts approximately 4 million overnight visitors and a staggering 14 million day-trippers annually.
The peak season in Cornwall is usually during school holidays and summer months, drawing thousands of tourists seeking relaxation along the stunning coastlines. Statistical data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that in August alone, there were over 710,860 nights booked at short-term holiday accommodations.
While a trip to Cornwall can be marred by overcrowding and high costs due to soaring demand, there are lesser-known coastal spots in the UK that offer equally breathtaking views and a more tranquil atmosphere.
Mark Hutchins, the founder of Beach Stays, expressed, “Cornwall is truly magnificent, and its popularity is well-deserved. However, there are coastal areas in the UK that are equally stunning, less crowded, and more affordable. Many people overlook them simply because they are less familiar. It’s their loss, and a gain for those willing to explore beyond the usual destinations.”
Mark suggests that these underrated locations provide scenic coastal views and beautiful beaches without compromise. He recommends considering West Wales and Northumberland for a serene seaside getaway, which come at a fraction of the cost compared to Cornwall.
West Wales is characterized by dramatic cliffs, unspoiled beaches, secluded coves, and charming coastal towns such as Cardigan and Aberaeron. Popular beaches in the area include Barafundle Bay, Pendine Sands, and Whitesands Bay, each offering miles of golden sands against the backdrop of the azure waters.
Visitors rave about the stunning beauty of these locations, with one praising Pendine Sands for its vast beach, picturesque views, ample amenities, and recreational options. Another visitor shared their annual retreat to Whitsand Bay in West Wales, emphasizing the peaceful and untouched nature of the sandy beaches.
Moreover, West Wales is home to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, a unique expanse of 186 miles along the picturesque coastline. The park provides excellent hiking opportunities and awe-inspiring views of estuaries, expansive beaches, and rugged cliffs.
Northumberland also boasts breathtaking scenery with pristine sandy beaches bordered by dunes, rolling hills, and heather moorlands. Bamburgh, one of the well-known beaches in the region, offers around three miles of golden sands overlooked by the majestic Bamburgh Castle, providing panoramic vistas of the Farne Islands.
The uncrowded beaches of Northumberland are popular among dog walkers, offering a serene environment year-round. Visitors praise the beauty of Bamburgh beach for its stunning views, peaceful ambience, and proximity to historical landmarks like Bamburgh Castle.
Other noteworthy beaches in Northumberland include Budle Bay, Beadnell Bay, and Embleton Bay, all featuring unique landscapes and historical attractions like Dunstanburgh Castle. The county is known as the ‘castle county,’ with iconic sites such as Alnwick Castle, a filming location for popular movies and TV series.
Exploring charming towns like Alnwick, Hexham, Corbridge, Bamburgh, and Berwick-upon-Tweed adds to the allure of the region, each offering a blend of history, scenic walks, and a mix of English and Scottish heritage.
With West Wales and Northumberland showcasing pristine beaches, picturesque towns, and idyllic coastal panoramas, it may be time to consider a change from the typical Cornish coastal experience.
