Italy’s government has come together to oppose what they perceive as Donald Trump’s disrespectful remarks, with Giorgia Meloni’s political opponents showing support for her after a rift between the two leaders. On Tuesday, Donald Trump criticized his close ally Meloni, accusing her of lacking ‘courage’ for not aligning with the US in its actions against Iran. This tension escalated following President Trump’s attack on Pope Leo.
Italian opposition leader Schlein stood up in defense of her country, backing Meloni for demonstrating solidarity with Pope Leo. She emphasized that Trump’s behavior is entirely unacceptable, receiving applause from the chamber as she continued to express her disapproval.
Schlein made a strong statement, asserting that Italians would not tolerate any insults towards their nation, particularly from Trump. She highlighted that no foreign leader should be allowed to attack, threaten, or disrespect Italy and its government.
Earlier that day, Trump expressed his disappointment in Meloni, questioning her courage for not supporting the US in the conflict. This criticism was directed at Meloni’s stance on the war and oil resources in Iran.
Meanwhile, Italy announced the suspension of the renewal of its defense agreement with Israel due to current circumstances. This decision followed an incident where Israeli forces fired warning shots at an Italian UN convoy in Lebanon, causing damage to a vehicle but resulting in no injuries.
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani’s condemnation of Israel’s actions in Lebanon led to tensions, with Israel summoning Italy’s ambassador in response. Despite the trend of countries halting arms exports to Israel, Meloni’s government has maintained a close relationship with Israel.
Meloni’s criticism of Trump’s comments regarding Pope Leo, coupled with the defense agreement suspension with Israel, has strained Italy’s relations with the US. Meloni defended her position, emphasizing that religious leaders should not be influenced by political figures, and labeled Trump’s remarks as unacceptable.
The Italian Prime Minister also weighed in on the conflict between Trump and Pope Leo XIV, denouncing Trump’s comments about the Holy Father. Trump retaliated, criticizing Italy’s stance on Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Despite the disagreements, Meloni still considers the US a key ally but asserts that alliance does not require her to support Trump on every issue. She stressed the importance of being able to voice disagreements even among close allies.
