During my childhood, I was tasked with painting a depiction of my favorite place in an art class. Using vibrant oil crayons, I chose to paint the museum that held a special place in my heart, filled with sculptures and artworks adorned in gilded frames. With a deep-seated love for museums, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to explore Porto’s latest cultural hub, brimming with a variety of museums.

Known as World of Wine Porto (WOW), this district comprises seven museums, six of which are permanent installations, while one rotates its exhibits. Alongside these museums, there are twelve restaurants, a wine school, and numerous shops offering diverse items from local art to quirky rubber ducks. Despite its launch in 2020 amidst challenging times, WOW has already garnered significant popularity.

Each museum within WOW delves into a unique aspect of Portugal’s rich history and culture, ranging from the art of chocolate-making to cork production and the evolution of wine consumption through the ages, catering to visitors of all generations.

During our visit on a bustling Saturday, the district bustled with a mix of tourists and locals, all eager to explore the offerings of WOW. Our journey commenced at The Chocolate Story, an immersive museum exploring the cultural significance and origins of chocolate from ancient civilizations like the Aztecs and Mayans to modern times. The museum featured informative plaques in both English and Portuguese, providing a comprehensive understanding of chocolate history. Visitors could then proceed to the WOW Chocolate Factory to witness chocolate production and indulge in tastings.

Following a delightful chocolate tasting experience, we transitioned to the Wine Experience, another meticulously curated museum detailing the history of wine and showcasing diverse Portuguese wine regions. Combining educational exhibits with immersive experiences, the museum offered interactive displays and captivating documentaries.

Despite my initial aversion to wine, the Wine Experience played a significant role in altering my perspective. The museum’s detailed insights into the wine-making process and the dedication behind each glass heightened my appreciation. The culmination of the visit included a wine tasting session guided by an expert, introducing us to three distinct wines and proper tasting techniques.

One of the standout features of WOW was the close proximity of its attractions. All the museums are situated within a five-minute walk from each other, allowing visitors to explore multiple venues in a single day. Nestled in Vila Nova de Gaia’s historic center, WOW offers panoramic views of Porto from the south side of the Douro River, showcasing the city’s picturesque charm.

As daylight transitions to night, the cityscape comes alive with twinkling lights, accentuating the beauty of Porto’s architecture and the Dom Luís I Bridge spanning the river.

After a fulfilling day of museum exploration and wine appreciation, we savored a gastronomic experience at one of WOW’s esteemed restaurants.

Mira Mira by Ricardo Costa, a renowned chef with a two-Michelin-starred restaurant at the Yeatman Hotel, offered a luxurious dining setting with a focus on Portuguese cuisine. The Harvest Menu, a nine-course culinary journey, presented an array of exquisitely crafted dishes that tantalized the taste buds.
