Frank Beard, the drummer of the Texan boogie-rock group ZZ Top, known for his contributions to hit songs like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. He was under hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, when he died, surrounded by his family, as confirmed by publicist Bob Merlis. Band co-founder and guitarist Billy Gibbons, currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, paid tribute to Beard, highlighting his innovative drumming style that was instrumental in ZZ Top’s success.

ZZ Top, renowned for selling over 50 million records and achieving multiple No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, has had a remarkable musical journey spanning six decades. Their impact on the music industry was further solidified by three Grammy Award nominations. Beard, reflecting on his musical journey in the 2019 documentary “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” expressed his unwavering passion and dedication to the music that brought the band together.

The iconic trio, composed of Beard, Billy Gibbons, and Dusty Hill, established ZZ Top in 1969, drawing inspiration from blues legends and British rock influences. With their distinctive appearance and sound, characterized by long beards, dark sunglasses, and a fusion of rock, blues, and funk elements, ZZ Top captivated audiences worldwide. Their breakthrough came with the release of “La Grange” in 1973, followed by a string of hits such as “Tush” and “Cheap Sunglasses.”

Known for their witty and engaging lyrics, ZZ Top’s music found its way into Hollywood, featuring in various films like “Happy Feet,” “Evan Almighty,” and “Dazed and Confused.” Their 1983 album “Eliminator,” marked by a blend of traditional blues and modern production elements, produced chart-topping hits like “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Legs,” and “Sharp-Dressed Man.” The band’s electrifying performances, complete with a Texas-shaped stage and live animals, left an indelible mark on the music scene.

The evolution of ZZ Top’s signature bearded look was a quirky tale that added to their mystique. A chance decision to forego shaving during a hiatus led to the band’s iconic appearance, which resonated with fans and music enthusiasts. Embracing their rock-chic persona, ZZ Top’s music videos, with their unique style and humor, became synonymous with the era of MTV. Collaborations with renowned producers like Rick Rubin revitalized the band’s sound, ensuring their continued relevance in the music industry.

Frank Beard’s passing in 2025 marks the end of an era for ZZ Top, following the loss of Dusty Hill in 2021. Despite the band’s recent challenges, their enduring legacy and impact on rock music will continue to resonate with fans around the world. Frank Beard is survived by his wife, Debbie Meredith, and three children.
