In Edmonton, as 1999 drew to a close, Desiree Kendrick meticulously stocked her pantry with essential supplies like canned goods and powdered milk, with a sizable water tank in her garage. Her home was a fortified haven in case of a disaster, complemented by well-laid out contingency plans at her workplace.

Kendrick is part of the generation that earnestly prepared for the anticipated Y2K crisis. This acronym symbolized the widespread concern that the world’s computer systems would malfunction as the new millennium dawned. Fortunately, both businesses and individuals weathered the Y2K storm successfully.

Fast forward less than 25 years, and Kendrick finds herself grappling with a different challenge – deciphering the myriad abbreviations and acronyms prevalent in modern conversations. Today, her mind is inundated with a complex web of shorthand terms, akin to the tangled mess of electrical cords behind a television set, leaving her feeling somewhat disconnected from her native language.

Growing up in a household where education was highly valued, Kendrick’s parents instilled in her a love for learning. Their move from India to Canada and their careers as educators in rural Alberta fostered a culture of continuous education in their family. Surrounded by bookcases at home, Kendrick, being the first Canadian-born child, imbibed a thirst for knowledge from a young age.

However, despite her exposure to diverse learning experiences, Kendrick finds herself struggling to keep up with the rapidly evolving language of modern communication. Unfamiliar with popular terms like “LMAO” and “WTF,” she attributes this linguistic gap to her parents’ insistence on avoiding slang during her upbringing.

As a mother, Kendrick took a different approach, emphasizing clear communication and extensive vocabulary with her children. Yet, she now often relies on her daughter for translations of contemporary acronyms. From mistaking “ICYMI” for a brand logo to confusing “IRL” with “URL,” Kendrick’s journey through the maze of modern abbreviations is one of constant learning and occasional bemusement.

In her quest to navigate this linguistic terrain, Kendrick humorously recounts her misinterpretations of terms like “JSYK” and “FOMO,” illustrating the disconnect between her understanding and the evolving lexicon of today’s youth. Acknowledging her limitations, she humorously reflects on the things she might be missing out on due to her unfamiliarity with these expressions.

Embracing the ethos of lifelong learning, Kendrick acknowledges that her education is a work in progress. With gratitude for the guidance of her parents, whom she fondly refers to as the “GOATs” (Greatest of All Time), she remains committed to mastering the nuances of modern communication, one acronym at a time.
