London police have advised residents to steer clear of Westminster Bridge following a significant incident that led to the closure of the bridge. The closure has affected both sides of the busy roadway, causing substantial traffic disruptions. Emergency services, including ambulances, police, and fire crews, swiftly responded to the scene after receiving reports around 11 am.
Authorities have provided an update on the situation that triggered the closure. A Metropolitan Police representative stated that officers are currently present at Westminster Bridge due to concerns for a man’s well-being. The police were alerted at 10:12 am on Wednesday, October 8, and are engaging with the individual. As a precaution, the bridge has been sealed off to traffic, and the public is urged to avoid the area.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed their involvement, stating that they are supporting other emergency services with multiple units and a fire boat on-site. Transport for London (TfL) has advised motorists to find alternative routes, citing delays on various roads surrounding Westminster Bridge.
Images from the scene depict a secured area with ambulances stationed in the vicinity. Bus routes have been redirected, and traffic monitoring systems indicate an extended closure of the affected road. Metropolitan Police officers within the cordon confirmed that the incident is linked to mental health concerns and that no injuries have been reported.
The situation on Westminster Bridge occurred subsequent to an earlier disruption on several underground train lines. The Metropolitan line experienced delays while the Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines between Baker Street and Aldgate have since reopened.
Notably, this incident follows a previous closure of Westminster Bridge in August due to a similar mental health-related issue, resulting in an eerily empty bridge.
