In contrast to the Prime Minister’s declining popularity, voters have shown more support for Starmer’s recent international actions. The Good Growth Foundation’s report suggests leveraging defense spending to bridge the gap between Starmer’s international successes and his domestic challenges.
Starmer’s decisions to stay out of the Iran conflict, maintain a cooler relationship with Trump, and strengthen ties with the EU were particularly well-received by voters. A significant portion (43%) of those surveyed believed that Starmer’s responses to the conflict were appropriate.
While Starmer seems to be on the right track with international matters, convincing the public of his effectiveness in handling domestic issues remains a challenge. Voters were less confident in his ability to address issues like the cost of living crisis, immigration, and the economy, with healthcare ranking higher on their concerns.
The survey also compared how other party leaders would have fared in handling the Iran conflict. Nigel Farage was perceived as the least favorable alternative, with voters expressing more confidence in Starmer’s decision-making. The Good Growth Foundation’s recommendations emphasize the importance of defense policy in not only enhancing national security but also supporting economic prosperity and cybersecurity measures.
