Russia is suspected of planning to deploy a nuclear weapon in space that could lead to global disruption by targeting satellites. A senior US military official has raised concerns about Moscow’s potential use of a nuclear anti-satellite weapon, which could potentially disable thousands of satellites and disrupt communications worldwide, likening it to a “Space Pearl Harbor.”

General Stephen Whiting, the head of US Space Command, expressed deep worries about Russia’s intentions, linking it to a broader pattern of aggressive behavior in space following the conflict in Ukraine. He highlighted Russia’s ongoing activities such as satellite communication and GPS interference, which pose risks to civilian aircraft.

In a podcast interview, Gen Whiting emphasized Russia’s focus on developing counter-space capabilities, including the possibility of deploying a nuclear anti-satellite weapon in low Earth orbit. He stated that Russia perceives the US and NATO’s conventional military strength as a challenge and views targeting space systems as a means to “level the battlefield.”

Deploying a nuclear weapon in orbit would violate the Outer Space Treaty, an agreement signed by Russia. The US military’s strongest public warning on the threat posed by Moscow comes amid ongoing concerns regarding Russia’s alleged ambitions, initially disclosed in February 2024 during closed-door briefings to Congress.

Experts caution that a nuclear detonation in low Earth orbit could potentially destroy a significant number of satellites, affecting critical services such as military intelligence, communications, internet, mobile phone networks, and GPS. Gen Whiting also highlighted the impact of Russia’s GPS jamming on civilian flights in parts of Europe.

He further raised alarms about China’s rapid development of space weapons, urging increased investment in Britain’s space defenses. Gen Whiting believes that future global conflicts may originate in space, emphasizing the importance of deterring such scenarios to safeguard the benefits of space exploration for humanity.
