Britain’s former defense secretary has issued a cautionary statement, emphasizing that the country’s heavy reliance on the United States is no longer sustainable. Lord George Robertson highlighted that even after Donald Trump’s departure from office, the UK’s ties with Washington are unlikely to revert to normal. He pointed out that ongoing shifts in global dynamics, such as a growing emphasis on China and skepticism toward globalization, will push the US towards a more transactional approach in foreign affairs, irrespective of the White House occupant.

During an address at Chatham House, Lord Robertson emphasized the need for increased defense spending by the UK as global uncertainties escalate. He urged for a shift towards a more independent military posture, arguing that a misguided assumption of perpetual US support during crises has eroded the UK’s defense capabilities. He stressed that the current high level of military dependency on the US is unsustainable.

The once strong “special relationship” between the US and the UK has faced significant strain, particularly after Keir Starmer defied President Trump’s requests to engage in a conflict with Iran. Lord Robertson, a key figure in the Government’s Strategic Defence Review, publicly criticized Keir Starmer’s administration for its complacency on defense matters. He further warned against Britain’s prolonged overreliance on the US for its defense needs.

The House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee echoed similar sentiments, calling for a reassessment of the enduring “special relationship” with the US and advocating for deeper ties with European nations as a safeguard against an unpredictable ally. Despite these concerns, US Ambassador Warren Stephens reaffirmed the US commitment to the UK as its closest ally, emphasizing joint efforts to ensure the security and prosperity of both nations.

Stressing the importance of preparedness and collaboration with allies in countering modern threats, Ambassador Stephens reiterated the United States’ dedication to working alongside the UK for collective security.
