Yvette Cooper has strongly criticized Iran for its dangerous actions and accused the government of trying to manipulate the global economy by obstructing the Strait of Hormuz.

This condemnation coincided with the Foreign Secretary’s important discussions with numerous countries, where he called for the immediate and unconditional reopening of the crucial shipping passage. The UK and its partners also deliberated on implementing sanctions against Iran if the Strait of Hormuz remains shut.

Due to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to attacks from the US and Israeli forces, oil prices worldwide have surged, sparking concerns of shortages. Previously, more than 150 tankers transited through the Strait daily, but recent data shows only five vessels passed through in the last 24 hours.

In a virtual meeting that brought together representatives from over 40 nations, the Foreign Secretary highlighted the numerous attacks on vessels in the Strait and the thousands of seafarers currently stranded on ships. Yvette Cooper emphasized Iran’s disruption of the international shipping route, negatively impacting the economies of several countries and global trade in commodities like natural gas, fertilizer, and jet fuel.

Following the meeting, there were discussions about the potential imposition of additional sanctions on Iran and utilizing diplomatic channels through the United Nations to address the situation. The allies considered various collective actions, including exploring coordinated economic and political measures like sanctions if Iran continues to block the Strait.

In response to US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on the conflict, Cooper expressed a different approach, emphasizing the need for caution and a well-thought-out plan to avoid escalating tensions and economic repercussions. She stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to alleviate the global economic strain caused by Iran’s actions.

Furthermore, plans are underway for military planners from the participating countries to hold discussions on de-mining operations in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure safe passage once the conflict subsides.

Additionally, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called on the Prime Minister to take decisive action in reopening the shipping route for oil and gas. He stressed the necessity of international cooperation to address the challenges in the region and criticized Trump’s handling of the situation. Davey emphasized the importance of forming an international coalition to resolve the crisis and highlighted the significant benefits of reopening the Strait of Hormuz for the British population, particularly in terms of energy costs.
