Britain’s pubs and restaurants have always been integral to our communities. The challenges faced by hospitality businesses, particularly in dealing with escalating energy costs due to volatile fossil fuel markets, are evident. The ongoing turmoil in the Middle East underscores the need for a shift towards clean, domestically controlled energy sources to ensure energy security.
In response to this, the government has initiated measures such as procuring significant levels of solar, onshore and offshore wind projects, and boosting nuclear development to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and lower energy bills. To aid hospitality businesses affected by affordability issues, a program has been introduced to implement an energy-saving scheme.
A new digital tool is being rolled out to over 525 pubs, restaurants, and hotels, offering tailored plans to help businesses monitor and cut their energy consumption and emissions. The effectiveness of this initiative is already evident, with some establishments reducing their overnight energy usage by up to 66% in the past year, resulting in average savings of nearly £2,500 per establishment.
For instance, a small pub in Caterham, Surrey, has saved over £1,500 annually by slashing its overnight energy consumption by 66%. Similarly, a pub in Bromley is now saving £48 per week, translating to almost £2,500 in yearly profits that were previously lost to energy wastage. This scheme not only reduces costs but also lowers carbon emissions, illustrating that achieving net zero is beneficial for businesses and the environment.
By empowering owners to manage their energy usage efficiently, the program allows them to focus on core operations, such as serving customers and expanding their businesses, rather than worrying about bills. The prosperity of small businesses contributes to vibrant communities, fostering local employment opportunities and enabling people to gather at their favorite pub or restaurant for various occasions.
Today’s announcement reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting the hospitality sector, including initiatives like the 15% reduction in business rates for pubs and the £10 million Hospitality Support Fund. This clean energy mission aims to safeguard businesses, families, and communities nationwide.
