A prominent European carrier operating flights to the United Kingdom has decided to cancel services to 18 destinations starting next month. Turkish Airlines has revealed its plan to halt 18 international routes, affecting travel across Europe, Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East. These adjustments are expected to disrupt travel plans between May and June 2026.

The modifications to Turkish Airlines’ summer schedule for 2026 could impact flights from its primary hub at Istanbul Airport (IST), a popular destination for British holidaymakers. The airline is well-received by Brits for its services to various UK airports, including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, as well as Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.

This strategic review by the airline involves suspending routes with decreased demand, especially those serving lesser-known locations. Among the destinations affected by Turkish Airlines’ suspension are Juba, Kinshasa, Luanda, Lusaka, Aqaba, Billund, Bissau, Ferghana, Freetown, Havana, Hurghada, Kirkuk, Leipzig/Halle, Libreville, Monrovia, Najaf, Pointe Noire, and Turkistan.

While these routes will be paused from May to June 2026, some may not resume until late October 2026, and a few might not be available until March the following year. However, travelers with plans to visit Istanbul should not worry as the airline is prioritizing high-demand routes.

The suspension of these 18 lesser-known destinations could have implications on tourism in those countries and limit options for travelers seeking new experiences. Additionally, amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Turkish Airlines is prolonging the suspension of routes to several Iranian cities like Isfahan, Mashhad, Shiraz, and Tabriz until the end of October 2026.

In a separate development, Turkish Airlines expanded its operations by adding London Stansted as its third London gateway earlier this year. This expansion enhances access for Brits to over 350 destinations in 133 countries, with the UK and Ireland anticipating a weekly flight schedule of 168 flights during the summer season.

In response to the launch, Fuat Fırat, Turkish Airlines Vice President Sales (Middle and Northern Europe), emphasized the importance of the UK market for the airline. The addition of London Stansted flights aims to increase connectivity in the region and provide guests with more travel options within the global network. This new route is expected to boost commercial and tourism activities across the area.
