Donald Trump criticized the current state of the special relationship between the US and UK, expressing dissatisfaction and even issuing a warning regarding a potential trade deal. The remarks from the US President, who has been vocal about Keir Starmer in recent times, coincide with escalating tensions due to the US-Israeli bombing of Iran, leading to the closure of the critical shipping lane, the Strait of Hormuz, causing a surge in global oil prices.

During an interview with Sky News, Trump mentioned his liking for Mr. Starmer but criticized the UK government’s approaches to energy and immigration. He highlighted the perceived lack of support from the UK when needed, stating that the relationship has not been as cooperative as desired. Trump also hinted at the possibility of altering the trade deal previously agreed upon.

Regarding the UK’s decision to close North Sea oil, Trump expressed disapproval, attributing it to the country having high energy prices globally. Despite these tensions, he dismissed concerns that the strained relationship would overshadow the upcoming royal visit to the US.

In contrast, UK Treasury minister James Murray emphasized the historic and profound nature of the special relationship between the two countries. Trump’s comments followed criticism from Chancellor Rachel Reeves on the US-Iran war. Reeves expressed frustration and anger over the conflict, highlighting the lack of clear objectives and exit strategies, which have led to repercussions affecting families in both the UK and the US.

Reeves criticized the initiation of the conflict without a well-defined plan, emphasizing the negative impact on families worldwide. She underscored the importance of clarity in objectives and exit strategies in conflicts to mitigate adverse effects on families and global stability.
