One individual has passed away, while a minimum of four individuals have sustained severe injuries following a tornado that hit an area located just 10 miles north of Paris.
In the Val d’Oise region of France, the sudden and unusually intense weather event led to the collapse of three cranes and the tearing off of roofs by powerful winds. This incident resulted in significant damage and casualties, prompting a massive emergency response involving 80 firefighters, 50 police officers, and 20 ambulance service personnel dispatched to residential neighborhoods in Ermont.
The deceased victim, a 23-year-old construction worker, was identified as one of the ten victims affected by the tornado. The public prosecutor confirmed the fatality and mentioned that the victim was an employee of a construction company operating at the site.
Due to the aftermath of the tornado, roads and railway lines in the vicinity of Paris are currently closed as cleanup operations are underway. The tornado struck the area at approximately 5:45 pm local time, causing widespread destruction.
According to the Keraunos observatory, a French meteorological organization specializing in monitoring tornadoes and severe weather phenomena, the tornado is believed to have originated from a supercell-type storm. These storms consist of rotating updrafts of circulating air that can sustain themselves for extended periods, leading to severe weather outcomes such as large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez took to Twitter to express his concern, stating that the tornado incident resulted in one fatality and multiple severe injuries. He emphasized his support for the affected individuals, emergency services, and local officials, offering condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
