Navigating the balance between device usage and quality family time can be a daily challenge for many families. As children increasingly rely on their devices for educational purposes, social interactions, entertainment, and more, determining a reasonable screen time limit can be a blurred line.

Approaching the upcoming Easter holidays, finding a compromise that satisfies everyone can be a daunting task. In an effort to promote online safety discussions within families, The Family Chat campaign, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, is ongoing throughout 2026.

Renowned author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, is engaging in conversations with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter regarding screen time and online safety. She highlights the importance of utilizing Tesco Mobile’s resources, including a downloadable family pledge, to establish healthy screen time habits and ensure children’s safety online.

Giovanna emphasizes the need for regular review of screen time rules within her own family. While her children are currently engaged in various activities beyond screen time, she acknowledges that adjustments may be necessary as they grow older.

For the Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, phones play a vital role in communication, schoolwork, and managing their busy schedules. Seeking a balanced approach to screen time, the family participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge to foster open discussions.

By completing challenges that compared screen-related activities to offline pursuits, the Karleys gained insights into their digital habits. They committed to the family pledge provided by Tesco Mobile, outlining agreements on screen time management, privacy, and sharing practices.

Drawing from expert advice and resources available on Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub, the Karleys are embarking on a journey to strike a healthy equilibrium between digital engagement and real-world interactions. Implementing a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm, they aim to prioritize family bonding through activities like group quizzes.

In addition to promoting healthy screen time practices, it is essential for families to be vigilant about online content. Tips include scrutinizing sensational headlines, being wary of suspicious websites, verifying information from trusted sources, and educating kids on verifying social media accounts for authenticity. Collaborative fact-checking activities can further enhance digital literacy within the family unit.
