In today’s digital age, striking a balance between screen time and meaningful family interactions can be a daily challenge. With children increasingly using their devices for various purposes like learning, socializing, gaming, and streaming, determining a reasonable limit on screen time can be a complex task.

To address this issue, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, is being conducted throughout 2026. The initiative aims to encourage families to engage in open and honest conversations about online safety within their households. Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is leading discussions with parents and children to shed light on the challenges they encounter, their coping strategies, and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety resources can offer valuable support.

One of the resources provided is a downloadable family pledge, where families can establish simple agreements regarding healthy screen time practices and online safety measures. Giovanna shares her approach to managing screen time with her husband Tom, emphasizing the importance of not letting phone use become a sole activity, particularly for younger children. She acknowledges the evolving nature of the situation as children grow older and stresses the need for ongoing evaluation and adaptation.

For the Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenage children, phones play a crucial role in communication, schoolwork, and managing their busy schedules. Seeking a balanced perspective on screen time, the family participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge, engaging in activities that highlighted the impact of screen and offscreen activities.

Following the challenges, the Karleys committed to implementing their newfound knowledge by completing Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, which outlines guidelines on screen time, privacy, and sharing. Leveraging Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub, Anna and Emmanuel plan to utilize expert advice and resources to maintain a healthy equilibrium between digital engagement and real-world connections. They have already initiated a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm to prioritize family time, engaging in activities like quizzes together.

In addition to managing screen time, families should remain vigilant about online content, watching out for sensational headlines, suspicious websites, and misinformation. It’s essential to verify information from reliable sources and educate children on identifying trustworthy social media accounts. Collaborative fact-checking activities can further enhance digital literacy within the family unit.
