In the realm of bread choices, once you delve into the world of sourdough, it’s a journey that tends to stick. The distinctive tangy flavor and chewy texture make it a must-have in many households, including mine. Jason’s brand is often the go-to for sourdough enthusiasts, with their ciabattin variety being a personal favorite of mine for its ideal toasting size.

While a loaf of Jason’s typically falls within the £2.15 to £2.50 range, I embarked on a taste test adventure to compare four supermarket own-brand sourdough loaves against the renowned Jason’s. After visiting Tesco, Aldi, Asda, and Sainsbury’s, I was surprised to discover prices ranging from £1.75 to £2.44, with the smallest loaf being the priciest.

Setting up my toaster with slices of each brand, including Jason’s for reference, I evaluated them based on taste and texture. Despite the challenge of finding authentic sourdough in supermarkets, my search for a worthy alternative was met with success. One brand stood out as a clear winner, offering a balance of affordability and quality that rivaled Jason’s, according to reports from the Express.

This winning loaf has now become a regular purchase for me due to its consistent chewy sourdough texture and added depth from its production process. While the portions may be smaller than traditional sourdough loaves, they fit perfectly in the toaster, making for a convenient breakfast option. Additionally, the loaf freezes well, although it may not be the best choice for sandwiches, it excels when toasted.

Scoring an impressive 8/10, this standout loaf may come at a higher price, but its quality and taste justify the cost. On the other hand, Asda’s offering, while usually exceptional in other food categories, fell short in the sourdough test with a lack of flavor and dense consistency, earning it a 7/10 rating.

Among the contenders, Sainsbury’s own-brand sourdough surprised with its affordability and impressive flavor profile, securing an 8/10 rating. Despite some uneven slicing and smaller pieces, it emerged as a strong competitor in the taste test.

However, the undisputed winner in this sourdough showdown was a loaf priced at £1.75 (with a Clubcard offer), offering a perfect blend of crust, flavor, and size. With a noteworthy 9/10 rating, this loaf outshone the competition and proved to be a worthwhile purchase for its overall taste and value.
