A mother of two is determined to set a new Guinness World Record this weekend to inspire women of all cultural backgrounds to run comfortably in their own choice of attire. Madhusmita Jena, also known as Madu, aims to break the record for running the Manchester Marathon in a saree in under three hours and 50 minutes, aiming to beat the current record holder by five minutes. For Madu, residing in Stockport, Greater Manchester, running is more than just a physical activity.

Growing up in various countries across the Middle East and Africa, Madu began running in October 2008 while living in Dubai with her newborn son. Seeking an escape from the monotony of stay-at-home motherhood, she joined a running group, initially underestimating the distances they covered during training. Despite initial doubts, she completed a 16km run on her first day and found immense joy in the experience, leading her to achieve significant milestones in her running journey.

Over the years, Madu, now 46, has become a seasoned runner with 41 marathons under her belt, including challenging ultramarathons. Despite transitioning careers and moving back to the UK, her passion for running remains unwavering. Her upcoming attempt to break the Guinness World Record symbolizes empowerment for women of diverse backgrounds, emphasizing the freedom to choose their attire and prioritize their physical and mental well-being.

Fueled by her advocacy for women’s running, Madu has previously completed marathons in a saree, showcasing her cultural heritage and breaking stereotypes. As she prepares for the challenge ahead, she adapts her training routine to accommodate hormonal changes and age-related factors, aiming to set a new benchmark in her running career while supporting a charitable cause close to her heart.

Reflecting on her journey, Madu encourages women to make time for themselves and pursue their goals unapologetically, challenging societal norms that may hinder their self-care practices. Through her dedication to running and philanthropy, Madu exemplifies resilience, determination, and a commitment to empowering others within her community.
