The Philippines and Indonesia have both issued tsunami alerts after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck earlier today. The tremor originated off the coast of the Mindanao region in the Philippines, according to the country’s seismology agency. Concerns are high that tsunami waves could surge up to 3 meters (10 feet) above normal levels in parts of the Philippines and up to 1 meter higher in certain areas of Indonesia and Palau.

Reports indicate that several buildings have sustained damage in the province of Davao Oriental in the Philippines, a region still reeling from a recent 6.9 magnitude earthquake that claimed the lives of 74 individuals and displaced thousands last week.

British tourists, particularly diving enthusiasts, are attracted to the Philippines for its scenic beaches and natural landscapes, such as the renowned Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

Following the earthquake, approximately 250 patients were evacuated from a damaged hospital in Davao Oriental and relocated to temporary tents, as confirmed by Governor Nelson Dayanghirang. Although two casualties have been reported so far, rescue operations are underway, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assuring that the government is actively engaged in providing assistance to those in need.

In the aftermath of the quake, numerous structures, including an international airport in Davao city, have shown signs of structural damage. Despite this, the airport remains operational with no flight disruptions reported, according to Office of Civil Defense deputy administrator Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV.

Furthermore, a chemical spill was triggered at San Pedro College in Davao City due to the earthquake, prompting a response from the Bureau of Fire Protection’s Special Rescue Force.

The Philippines, situated along the volatile ‘Ring of Fire,’ faces a constant threat of natural disasters. Dr. Teresito Bacolol of the Philippines Volcanic agency emphasized the importance of preparedness and urged residents not to panic but to remain vigilant given the country’s susceptibility to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.

President Marcos has called for evacuations in coastal regions and assured that search and rescue efforts will commence once conditions are deemed safe. The United Nations has also expressed readiness to support the Philippine government in coordinating relief efforts.

As the situation unfolds, health workers are attending to those injured by the earthquake, with reports of fatalities and injuries emerging. Authorities in both the Philippines and Indonesia are on high alert, advising residents to stay calm and exercise caution amid the ongoing seismic activity.
