Michelle Tolley, a dedicated campaigner, was recognized at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her relentless efforts on behalf of over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal. Alongside fellow campaigners Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, she received a Pride of Britain Special Recognition Award last year.
During the award ceremony, Michelle was taken aback when all winners, including herself, were surprised with a cruise holiday courtesy of P&O Cruises, the new headline partner for the awards. This unexpected gesture brought joy to Michelle, who has endured health challenges and worked tirelessly to support fellow victims and hold the government accountable.
Having contracted hepatitis C from a blood transfusion in 1987, Michelle faced years of illness before receiving proper diagnosis and treatment. Determined to turn her anger into positive action, she established a support group, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and contributed to the government inquiry.
The prospect of a relaxing cruise holiday was a welcome change for Michelle and her husband, who had not traveled abroad since their marriage in 1984. They booked a Canary Islands cruise for May, with plans to renew their wedding vows on board. P&O Cruises went above and beyond, organizing a beautiful vow renewal ceremony complete with flowers, photographs, and special meals.
Embarking on the Ventura cruise ship, Michelle was overwhelmed by the experience, likening it to Christmas morning. She and Dean savored every moment, exploring the ship’s amenities, indulging in delicious cuisine, and immersing themselves in the on-board entertainment.
Their adventures ashore in Madeira and the Canary Islands provided unique experiences, from touring banana plantations to exploring historic towns via tuk-tuk. In Las Palmas, a tuk-tuk tour highlighted the vibrant Old Town, while a coach and river cruise in Lisbon offered breathtaking views and insights into the city’s landmarks.
By the end of their holiday, Michelle and Dean were captivated by the cruise experience and are eager to embark on future voyages. Michelle lauds the exceptional service, delectable food, and warm hospitality aboard Ventura, encouraging others to embrace the cruise holiday experience for its fantastic facilities and friendly atmosphere.
