Parents at Gateacre School in Liverpool have expressed strong disapproval of a new policy that prohibits students from using the restroom during class time. The school administration issued a notice to parents over the weekend outlining various guidelines for the students’ return from the Easter holiday, including required equipment, arrival protocols, and rules regarding attendance and punctuality.

Of particular concern to parents was a section in the notice that stipulated students would only be allowed restroom breaks before school, during breaks, at lunchtime, and after school, but not during lessons. The rationale provided by the school emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and engagement in class, offering designated times and spaces for restroom use to minimize disruptions to learning.

While acknowledging that students may need to leave class during the day for restroom visits, the school assured that support, such as medical passes for those with specific needs, was available. However, students who leave class were expected to catch up on missed work to ensure academic progress and full engagement with the curriculum.

The school urged parents to encourage their children to utilize restroom facilities outside of lesson times to develop good time-management habits and avoid missing essential instruction or class discussions. Concerned parents criticized the policy, expressing dismay over potential penalties for restroom breaks and highlighting challenges, especially for female students, in adhering to restricted restroom times.

Additionally, the school disclosed plans to allocate specific restroom facilities to different year groups, with staff monitoring each block during operating hours. The notice also included rules prohibiting the use of mobile phones during school hours, with severe consequences for unauthorized phone use.

Gateacre School emphasized its commitment to attendance and punctuality, enforcing strict arrival times and same-day detentions for latecomers. This recent policy controversy adds to previous disagreements between the school and parents, including a past dispute over morning routines and disciplinary practices.

Gateacre School, under the leadership of Headteacher Nabil Jamil, is part of the Northern Schools Trust, and inquiries have been made to the trust for further comments on the matter.
