Lidl is set to open over 50 new stores in the coming year, leading to the creation of 2,000 jobs. This initiative is part of a £600 million investment strategy, with new locations including Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire slated to open this summer. The supermarket chain is actively seeking new properties across Great Britain for expansion.
With over 1,000 stores in the UK and a workforce of more than 35,000 employees, Lidl aims to have a positive impact on British communities through its growth. Ryan McDonnell, the CEO of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to creating high-quality jobs and supporting British suppliers. The expansion also aligns with Lidl’s mission to make affordable, healthy food accessible to all.
Employment minister Kate Dearden praised Lidl’s investment, stating that the creation of thousands of jobs with fair wages will enhance living standards across the nation. In addition, Lidl recently announced a pay rise for its employees, with entry-level pay set to increase to £13.45 per hour nationwide, and up to £14.45 with tenure. London new starters will see their pay rise from £14.35 to £14.80, reaching £15.30 based on service length.
Lidl experienced a 10% sales increase during the Christmas period, serving nearly 51 million customers. The UK business generated over £1.1 billion in turnover in the month leading up to Christmas Eve, with a record high number of shoppers. Notably, the supermarket sold 11,000 tonnes of seasonal produce, marking a 70% increase from the previous year, with high demand for items like easy-peeler clementines.
Ryan McDonnell highlighted Lidl’s success during the festive season, attributing it to the company’s commitment to low prices, British food, and quality. As the fastest-growing physical supermarket, Lidl expanded its reach to offer exceptional value to customers nationwide.
