Lewis Hamilton, a prominent figure in Formula 1, advocates for Africa’s autonomy from colonial influences to reclaim its resources. The seasoned racer also expresses his wish for the sport to return to the continent before he retires.
During a discussion before the Australian Grand Prix as the 2026 season kicks off in Melbourne, Hamilton was questioned by a South African journalist about the possibility of a race in Africa. The seven-time world champion seized the opportunity to voice his aspirations for this to materialize while highlighting his concerns about the continent’s ongoing exploitation.
Hamilton emphasized the beauty of Africa and the need for its nations to unite and regain control of their resources from countries like France, Spain, Portugal, and Britain. He stressed the continent’s potential to become a leading global power if freed from external control.
Expressing his desire for Formula 1 to return to Africa, Hamilton points out that no Grand Prix has been held on the continent since 1993. He advocates for including Africa on the Formula 1 calendar, citing memorable experiences in countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa as potential race locations.
The racing icon is actively lobbying for Africa’s inclusion in Formula 1 events before his retirement, emphasizing his personal connection to the continent through his ancestry in Togo, Benin, Senegal, and Nigeria.
