In the aftermath of the debate in Scotland’s Parliament, I observed two individuals laughing, a stark display of insensitivity towards those opposing the bill. This scene resonated with my previous experiences in London witnessing resistance to the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) bill in the House of Lords. In Scotland, my act of accompanying my late husband to Dignitas would likely have resulted in charges of ‘culpable homicide.’

Advocating for a universal right to assisted dying across the UK, I traveled to Scotland to support the cause, believing that every individual should have the option of a dignified end. The emotional intensity of the debate became palpable when Liam McArthur and other MSPs shared deeply personal stories of harrowing deaths, leaving a lasting impact on me.

The challenges of accessing assisted death abroad mirrored my own experience, highlighting the bureaucratic hurdles and emotional toll involved. The painful process of bidding farewell to my husband’s lifeless body in a foreign land left me traumatized, grappling with solitude and grief.

Returning home to face the heart-wrenching task of packing away my husband’s belongings, including his medication and clothing, intensified my sorrow. The lonely journey back, coupled with breaking the news to my sons, plunged me into a state of profound despair, magnified by the empty seat beside me on the plane.

Upon arrival, the compassionate support extended by border control personnel amidst my distress was a stark contrast to the callousness I encountered during the debate. The subsequent police interview and months of uncertainty added to the emotional turmoil, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The callous laughter of those opposing the bill served as a painful reminder of the lack of empathy and understanding towards individuals grappling with end-of-life decisions. Our advocacy efforts aim to prevent others from enduring similar anguish, emphasizing the seriousness and sensitivity required in discussions around death and dying.
