A 57-year-old woman shared her experience of receiving a life-changing diagnosis many years after wearing her father’s coat that was contaminated with asbestos. Heather Von St James recalled how, as a child, she would wear her father’s jacket to feed her pet rabbits on chilly evenings without realizing it was covered in dust from construction sites and scented with his aftershave.

Unbeknownst to her, the coat she cherished was laden with asbestos, a hazardous material. Heather, residing in Minnesota, US, fell ill at 36 while pregnant for the first time. Initially attributing her symptoms to postpartum effects, she later experienced extreme fatigue and persistent fevers, prompting medical attention. A CT scan revealed a tumor near her lung, leading to the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Faced with a grim prognosis and the urgent need for surgery, Heather underwent a radical procedure that involved the removal of a rib, her left lung, the tumor-affected pleura, the heart lining, and part of her diaphragm. Subsequent treatments included heated chemotherapy, which proved successful in eradicating the cancer. Heather has been cancer-free since then.

Following her recovery, Heather’s advocacy work in patient support and awareness campaigns for asbestos-related illnesses has garnered international recognition. Despite the challenges of living with one lung, she remains dedicated to spreading hope and highlighting advancements in medical treatments. Heather emphasizes the importance of resilience and medical progress in combating such diseases.

Heather’s journey serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing the remarkable advancements in mesothelioma treatment and the power of perseverance.
