Caitlyn Moony, a former resident of Johannesburg, relocated to Vancouver in 2018 with high hopes. Initially drawn by the city’s allure and the presence of family, she soon encountered challenges. Despite the initial fascination with Vancouver’s natural beauty and unique lifestyle, Moony struggled to find her place. Lacking local connections and facing job market hurdles, she grew disillusioned with the city. The demanding work hours, high living costs, and the absence of a strong social network left her feeling isolated and disheartened. Eventually, the loneliness became unbearable, prompting her to seek solace elsewhere.
After enduring the pandemic-induced lockdown in Vancouver, Moony made a decision to return to London, a city she had previously resided in. London’s vibrant atmosphere and bustling energy provided a stark contrast to her prior experience in Vancouver. However, despite the initial excitement of being back in London, Moony found herself feeling like an outsider. Over time, she realized that Vancouver had left a lasting impact on her, shaping her into a more introspective and contemplative individual. Reflecting on her time in both cities, Moony acknowledged Vancouver’s flaws but also recognized the personal growth and self-discovery it had facilitated.
Now, having returned to Vancouver during a winter storm, Moony contemplates rekindling her relationship with the city. Despite its imperfections, she longs for the familiarity and sense of belonging that Vancouver offers. Embracing the city’s unique charm and learning to appreciate its nuances, Moony hopes to find a renewed connection with Vancouver, acknowledging the mutual understanding and respect that has developed over time.
