Fernando Alonso is being rumored to make a sensational return to his former team, Alpine, amid ongoing struggles for form at Aston Martin. While Alonso had expressed his intention to finish his Formula 1 career with Aston Martin, speculation is rife at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix about a potential switch.

Alonso, who turns 45 in July, has had three previous stints with the Enstone-based team, most notably winning consecutive drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 during the Renault era. Reports suggest that a reunion with team boss Flavio Briatore, who is still Alonso’s manager, could be on the cards. If Briatore extends the invitation, Alonso is likely to consider the opportunity.

However, any move back to Alpine would mean parting ways with the long-term arrangement Alonso has with Aston Martin. Despite nearing the end of his racing career, Alonso’s deal with Aston Martin secures him an ambassadorial role post-retirement, ensuring a continued connection to Formula 1 for years to come.

While Aston Martin had high hopes for the current season, aiming to move up the grid as part of their championship ambitions, their performance has faltered, especially with a challenging start to their engine partnership with Honda.

Meanwhile, Alpine has shown improvement this year after finishing last in the 2025 constructors’ championship. With Briatore back at the helm and the team benefitting from powerful Mercedes engines, they currently sit in fifth place, leading the midfield teams in the 2026 season.

Alonso appears upbeat at the Barcelona circuit, one of his home races and the site of his last F1 victory in 2013. However, with Barcelona not slated to be on the 2027 calendar, Alonso hinted that this might be his final F1 race at Montmelo, expressing gratitude to fans and contemplating his future in the sport.
