A contestant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” mentioned participating in an international whistling contest, sparking Ben Shannon’s interest. Curious, he and his daughter, Sumire, signed up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list. Initially, Ben viewed it as a lighthearted activity to enjoy with his daughter, considering it a low-stakes pandemic pastime.
Both Ben and Sumire had a knack for whistling, a skill passed down from Ben’s parents to him and then to Sumire. As lockdown restrictions eased, they submitted audition tapes to the Masters of Musical Whistling and were thrilled to be selected for the competition held in Los Angeles.
Upon discovering the competition’s serious nature, Ben sought coaching from Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. Their training sessions revealed the need for focused practice and performance adjustments for the competition.
Despite initial doubts, Ben and Sumire dedicated themselves to daily whistling practice leading up to the event. With determination and support, they found themselves in Hollywood for the 2023 Master of Musical Whistling competition, surrounded by talented participants from around the globe.
The competition showcased exceptional whistlers like Etienne Devaux and Hikari Fukushima, who demonstrated the artistry and dedication of the participants. Ben and Sumire also shone on stage, with Sumire winning silver in the kid’s category and Ben clinching gold in the level one adults group.
Reflecting on their experience, Ben realized the importance of embracing sincerity and passion, shedding the ironic detachment of his youth. Winning at the competition affirmed the value of wholehearted dedication and authenticity in pursuing what truly matters.
Their journey at the Masters of Musical Whistling competition highlighted the joy and fulfillment found in genuinely caring about something, even if it may seem unconventional. The event served as a transformative experience, emphasizing the power of embracing sincerity and passion in one’s pursuits.
