Horrifying scenes of animals in distress have been captured on video, shedding light on the harsh reality of laboratory testing in the UK, according to activists. The unprecedented footage, filmed by an employee at two testing facilities, depicts various animals such as beagles, primates, mini-pigs, rats, and rabbits undergoing significant suffering. In one instance, long-tailed macaques are seen restrained while being administered new anti-obesity medication to determine its suitability for human use.

The video also shows beagles with masks strapped to their faces, being made to inhale test substances, rabbits squeezed into tubes for IV testing, and monkeys struggling in restraints. Some animals are visibly distressed, with plastic tubes forcibly inserted down their throats. Mini-pigs are shown squealing in terror as liquids are tested on wounds on their backs, rats are immobilized in tubes and forced to inhale test substances. The disturbing nature of the images has prevented their publication.

Animal Aid and Animals International collaborated following a whistleblower’s revelation, providing extensive evidence of the trials that the former employee described as haunting due to the animals’ suffering. The worker expressed deep trauma over the testing procedures, emphasizing the public’s right to be informed about activities in UK labs that mandate such actions.

Activists have urgently called on the Government to expedite efforts to phase out animal testing, condemning the footage as shocking and horrific. The footage highlights the scale of regulatory toxicity testing in the UK, a necessary step before products can be sold in mainstream retail stores.

Director of Animal Aid, Iain Green, condemned the animal suffering in the footage, urging lawmakers to witness the distressing scenes and prioritize human-relevant scientific advancements over animal testing. The call for immediate action includes suspending new tests, reviewing existing licenses, and fulfilling the commitment to replace animals in scientific experimentation.

Although the testing facilities are regulated by the Home Office and operate within legal boundaries, the former lab worker aims to spark a public debate on animal testing. The emergence of this detailed footage, a rare occurrence in recent years, coincides with government plans to minimize animal experiments through modern non-animal testing methods.

While acknowledging the importance of some life-saving drugs tested on animals, a spokesperson for the government highlighted strict regulations governing animal testing. Emphasizing the UK’s commitment to reducing animal testing, the spokesperson highlighted ongoing efforts to phase out such practices and adopt alternative, proven testing methods.
