During my visit, I explored this historic destination known as the ‘City of Stories’, characterized by its winding cobbled streets, medieval architecture, timber-framed buildings, a 900-year-old outdoor market, and a vibrant independent scene with approximately 500 establishments.
Despite its convenient transport links and unique attractions, locals express that the city is often overlooked due to its location in East Anglia. “We are somewhat isolated, and many people tend to miss us. Travelers often bypass us when moving from north to south, going straight up and down,” shared Karen Williams, the owner of For the Love of Norfolk.
Leanne Fridd, the proprietor of the independent children’s bookshop Bookbugs and Dragon Tales, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We tend to be forgotten because of where we are situated. It’s not a stopover destination.”

She added, “Norwich may not have been considered cool in the past, but it has evolved into a trendy destination. I am incredibly proud to be a part of Norwich and its rebellious spirit. The pace here is relaxed – that’s the Norfolk way.”
Karen, whose shop is located in the historic Norwich market, added, “We are close to the coast and the Broads National Park, so within minutes, you can immerse yourself in nature. Norwich is compact, offering everything within a 10-minute walk, steeped in history.”
