Up to 1.5 million children will experience improved circumstances starting today as the Conservative government has officially eliminated the two-child benefit limit. Advocates have celebrated this move as a significant milestone, attributing the previous policy for causing approximately 100 children to fall into poverty daily. Despite opposition from the Conservative and Reform parties, the decision to abolish the limit is expected to lift around half a million children out of poverty.

The two-child limit, which restricted benefits like Universal Credit to a family’s first two children, had faced criticism from various sectors. Mark Russell, the CEO of The Children’s Society, emphasized the positive impact of ending this policy on families nationwide, highlighting the relief it would bring to children who had been unfairly affected by it. Likewise, Angi Gibson, a headteacher at Hadrian Park Primary School, expressed optimism about the immediate benefits the change would bring to families, emphasizing its potential to enhance children’s life opportunities significantly.

Helen Barnard, the director of policy and research at the foodbank charity Trussell, hailed the decision to lift the two-child limit as a crucial development for thousands of families who rely on food banks for support. She anticipated a reduction in the number of parents seeking emergency food assistance once the new policy is implemented, which would alleviate pressure on strained services and provide families with the security they deserve.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the full abolition of the two-child limit in her November Budget, marking a substantial step towards reducing child poverty. Research indicates that the majority of affected children come from households where at least one member is employed.

The Labour Party views this change as a significant achievement in tackling child poverty, with Chairwoman Anna Turley emphasizing the positive impact it will have on lifting nearly half a million children out of poverty. In contrast, Labour criticizes the Conservatives and Reform for their stance on child poverty and urges them to reconsider their approach.

Employment minister Dame Diana Johnson welcomed the removal of the two-child limit, stating that it would provide greater security and opportunities for hundreds of thousands of children. The government aims to break the cycle of disadvantage based on family background, and this policy change represents a step forward in achieving that objective.
