An enraged driver viciously assaulted a couple in front of their young child during a heated altercation in a parking lot.

Kurt Kirkham became agitated when the victims pointed out his violation of a one-way traffic rule. In a brutal attack, Kirkham left the father with a fractured sternum and forcefully ripped out a chunk of hair from the mother while hurling her to the ground, all while their distressed daughters witnessed the ordeal.

The family, including their three-year-old and nine-year-old daughters, was en route to acquire a pet on March 15. They found themselves in a car park near Dunelm in North Shields when Kirkham, driving a silver Mercedes, confronted them by driving the wrong way.

As the man halted his vehicle, Kirkham aggressively approached them. Despite a brief pause when informed about the children present, Kirkham suddenly lashed out, striking the man through the open window and alarming everyone by accessing the backseat where the children sat.

In a bid to protect his daughters, the father exited the car to divert Kirkham’s attention. Subsequently, Kirkham mercilessly assaulted the man by kicking him forcefully in the chest and then turned on the woman, throwing her to the ground and inflicting harm as the children cried in fear.

Upon his arrest, Kirkham acknowledged his driving error but described the incident as “unfortunate.” The woman, in a victim statement, expressed the severe impact on their family, emphasizing Kirkham’s violent and relentless behavior.

Kirkham, 36, from Walkerville, Newcastle, with a history of previous violent offenses, admitted guilt to assault charges and received a 29-month prison sentence. The judge condemned Kirkham’s actions, labeling them as a form of “car park rage” and highlighting the traumatic experience endured by the family, particularly the children witnessing their parents being attacked.

The judge emphasized the gravity of the harm caused by Kirkham, emphasizing the distressing nature of the assault in front of vulnerable children.
