Brits’ holiday preferences are evolving, with a remarkable 9,900% surge in searches for the ‘greenest city in the world’ over the past year. Research indicates a growing interest in cities that offer a blend of exploration, outdoor relaxation, and abundant green spaces, categorizing them as ‘nature rich.’

Iglu Cruise experts have introduced a Green City Index showcasing the top 10 cities that seamlessly integrate nature with urban living. Topping the list is Oslo, the capital of Norway, with a green score of 77.3, attributed to its excellent air quality and extensive public green areas.

Oslo stands out for its remarkable accessibility to green spaces, with 95% of residents living within a 300-meter walk of a verdant area. The city’s innovative ‘pocket parks’ initiative, community-driven projects transforming old parking spaces into green havens, has garnered praise. Moreover, Oslo boasts the world’s first ‘bee highway,’ a unique floral corridor enhancing the city’s biodiversity.

Noteworthy attractions in Oslo include the Royal Palace Park and Vigeland Park, the largest sculpture park by a single artist globally. Visitors can also enjoy nature escapes like Oslomarka forest and Sognsvann Lake trails, just a short metro ride from the city center.

For beach enthusiasts, Oslo offers picturesque sandy shores on the Bygdoy peninsula, featuring popular spots like Huk Beach with its beach volleyball court, and tranquil options like Paradisbukta and urban Tjuvholmen for a serene beach experience along the Oslo Fjord.

Among other eco-friendly cities in Europe, Vilnius, Helsinki, and Vienna secured top spots, with Reading as the sole UK entry. Internationally, Canberra, Sydney, and Singapore showcased their green initiatives, alongside Stockholm and Munich in Europe.
