In Berlin, gaining entry to the city’s famous techno clubs has always been a mysterious process. A recent study by the University of Bath, King’s College London, and Freie Universität Berlin, published in the Journal of Marketing, aimed to demystify the selection criteria used by door selectors. The research revealed that these selectors seek individuals who both ‘fit in’ and ‘stand out’ to enhance the club experience.

However, Berlin-based writer and musicologist, Dr. Liam Cagney, believes that the study only scratches the surface. He describes Berlin’s club scene as a blend of public and private space, making the door selection process more of an art form. According to Cagney, club selectors act as hosts inviting guests into their space, redefining social interactions in a city rich with cultural heritage.

Cagney acknowledges the clubs’ utilization of the experience economy to attract visitors but notes a fine line between exclusivity and commercialism. The influx of ‘techno tourists’ driven by social media platforms like TikTok has led to an increased focus on how to navigate the strict entry policies of renowned clubs such as Berghain and Tresor.

Despite the allure of these exclusive venues, Cagney warns that the influx of tourists with a consumerist attitude can disrupt the experience for regular club-goers. He emphasizes the role of bouncers in safeguarding the space for loyal patrons, citing instances where bouncers have employed creative tactics to control entry, like rejecting guests based on attire or creating spontaneous selection criteria.

While facing rejection at the club doors can be disheartening, Cagney believes that the current system, despite its flaws, remains the most viable option. He advocates for a shift in perspective, framing Berlin’s techno clubs as personal ‘parties’ rather than just entertainment venues, emphasizing the importance of becoming an insider to navigate the unpredictability of club entry.

Cagney’s upcoming novel, “Berghain Nights,” slated for release in October 2025, delves into Berlin’s club scene, blending essays and memoirs with interviews of electronic dance music artists and key figures in the city’s nightlife industry.
