Bristol Airport was forced to suspend all of its flights this morning after snow battered the area, sparking major travel chaos – with passengers facing delays for several hours.

Planes that were due to land at the airport earlier were forced to circle away, while those scheduled to depart this morning had not left the airport at their scheduled take-off times. At 6.15am, passengers were warned their flights would be suspended until 7.30am and that more information would be released when available.

By 8am, the airport announced all flights were operating again. It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the region yesterday, telling residents to brace for disruption brought on from sleet and snow hitting the area.

Roads and traffic monitoring site Inrix also warned passengers that flights from Bristol Airport had been stopped on Tuesday morning. It said: “Flights suspended at Bristol Airport due to bad weather. Social media reports suggest snow on the ground. Live flight data that no flights have left the airport and the first arrivals are not due till 7am. Passengers should check their flight before travelling to the airport.”

In a post shared on X, Bristol Airport wrote: “Passenger announcement, due to the ongoing weather conditions all flights have been currently suspended until 07:30, further announcements will be made once information is available.” The airport later confirmed all flights had resumed in a follow up tweet which read: “Passenger announcement, all flights are now operating, for latest information please refer to your airline.”

According to flight tracker AirNav, a Ryanair flight bound for Bristol this morning was diverting to London Stansted shortly after 7:30am. The Met Office’s yellow warning for snow and ice means some roads and railways in the area are likely to be impacted by longer journey times.

The affected region may also see icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, as well as injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Bristol’s closure comes after Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport both closed their runways on Sunday morning due to heavy snow and some key roads in northern England remained shut. Manchester Airport said its teams were working to clear them “as quickly as possible” but had been hampered by “heavy snow” at 7am on Sunday.

In an update shared on social media at 8.45am, Liverpool’s airport said the runway was still temporarily closed but the airport remained open. Both airports reopened their runways by 10.15am on Sunday but urged passengers facing delays to contact their airlines.
