In a surprising discovery at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, a hefty African spurred tortoise named Molly, typically native to the Sahara desert, was found meandering at a slow pace. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the marsh, expressed astonishment at the sight of Molly in an environment so far from her natural habitat.
After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, Malchuk and her team located and rescued the 36-kilogram tortoise that had strayed far from home. Initially assuming it was a local snapping turtle, they were taken aback by the unusual find. The final confirmation came through the iNaturalist app, prompting a swift search operation.
The staff at Oak Hammock provided care for Molly, offering her cucumbers and flower petals while she explored the area. Efforts to locate her owners were successful, and Molly was joyfully reunited with her family on July 22. It was revealed that Molly had been a cherished pet for 15 years, having grown up under their care.
Despite the reunion, the mystery remains of how Molly ventured over 20 kilometers to the marsh. Speculations suggest perhaps a well-meaning individual relocated her, unaware of the risks posed to a tortoise in such an environment.
