A judge has handed down a life sentence to Nathan Chasing Horse, known for his role in “Dances With Wolves,” after he was found guilty on 13 charges, mainly related to the sexual assault of three Indigenous women in Nevada.
During the sentencing, victims and their families spoke out about the lasting trauma caused by Chasing Horse, who abused his position as a spiritual leader to exploit them for his own satisfaction. One victim, Corena Leone-LaCroix, who was assaulted at the age of 14, expressed the irreparable loss she experienced.
Chasing Horse, dressed in his detention center uniform, maintained his innocence and will be eligible for parole after 37 years. Despite his claims of injustice, the judge highlighted his persistent denial of the charges and manipulation of trust for personal gain.
The sentencing marked the end of a lengthy legal process that began with Chasing Horse’s arrest and indictment in 2023, which led to additional charges in other states and Canada. British Columbia prosecutors also charged him with sexual assault in 2023, with legal proceedings temporarily halted due to his U.S. charges.
Chasing Horse, born on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, faced allegations of using his status as a Lakota medicine man to prey on Indigenous women. Prosecutors described how he abused his position over nearly two decades, leading to guilty verdicts on some charges.
Despite his denial and efforts for retrial, Chasing Horse’s victims and their families testified to the ongoing impact on their faith and well-being. The judge condemned his actions and manipulation of sacred traditions, while victims expressed their determination to rebuild their lives and seek justice.
