The Koh Phi Phi islands in Thailand boast stunning scenery with dramatic limestone cliffs, white sand beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise waters teeming with colorful marine life. These islands have been a popular tourist destination for years, gaining even more attention after being featured in the movie “The Beach” by Danny Boyle.
However, the success of the film has led to detrimental effects on the once pristine Maya Bay, where the movie was filmed. Every year, large numbers of visitors flock to Maya Bay, leading to overcrowding and environmental stress.
A recent video from Koh Phi Phi showcases a large crowd of sunseekers tightly packed near the dock, highlighting the overwhelming number of tourists visiting the area.
Koh Tours, a tour operator offering trips around the archipelago, addressed the issue of overtourism in a recent blog post. Despite efforts to mitigate the impact, managing the influx of tourists has been challenging.
The smaller island of Koh Phi Phi Leh, home to Maya Bay, was closed for three years to recover from the damage caused by excessive tourism. Although the island reopened with restrictions such as timed entries and boat limits, overcrowding remains a significant issue.
According to Koh Tours, the main island of Koh Phi Phi Don also faces overcrowding, particularly in the village on Tonsai Bay.
Jub Yata, a destination manager at Intrepid Travel specializing in sustainable tourism, emphasized the need for responsible travel practices to protect popular destinations like Maya Bay. Intrepid Travel focuses on offering alternative destinations like Koh Thap, Koh Poda, and Koh Khai to reduce the pressure on overcrowded areas.
Koh Thap, known for its stunning natural beauty and the unique Talay Waek phenomenon, is a popular stop for island-hopping tours. Koh Poda offers a quiet and serene escape, while Koh Khai in Phuket provides a more developed yet picturesque setting for snorkeling and swimming activities.
