Holidaymakers from the UK planning trips to Spanish destinations are at risk of facing penalties due to strict alcohol consumption regulations this summer, according to a travel expert.
Authorities in Spain are clamping down on excessive partying, especially in popular areas like the Balearic Islands, where over 3.5 million British tourists visited last year seeking sun and affordable drinks. However, concerns over disruptive behavior have led to anti-tourism protests and increased enforcement measures by locals against rowdy tourists.
To address these issues, Spanish officials have implemented the 2024 ‘Decree for Responsible Tourism’, prohibiting street drinking, particularly in places like Magaluf and San Antonio. Violations of these rules can result in substantial fines ranging from €500 to €3,000, depending on the severity of the offense.
Simon Hood, the executive director of John Mason International, has cautioned British travelers heading to Majorca and Ibiza about adhering to these regulations. Hood emphasized the importance of avoiding public drinking and excessive noise, as authorities are expected to enforce the laws rigorously throughout the summer to deter antisocial behavior.
Hood further explained that recent protests against overtourism have led Majorca and Ibiza to tighten Responsible Tourism rules, with new amendments introduced. Travelers, especially those booked on all-inclusive packages or planning bar crawls, should be mindful of restrictions such as a maximum of six alcoholic drinks per day in certain areas.
In an effort to control public drinking and alcohol promotions, the Balearic Islands have banned alcohol consumption on streets and beaches, with fines ranging from €750 to €3,000 for violations. Additionally, off-license alcohol sales are now restricted during specified hours to combat street drinking and antisocial conduct.
Hood advised travelers to respect local regulations and exercise caution to ensure a harmonious vacation experience for both tourists and residents. Despite the strict rules, he encouraged holiday-goers to enjoy their time responsibly while being mindful of the surroundings.
