Nestled by the River Waveney in Suffolk lies a charming market town that has been recognized as one of the top places to reside in. Beccles, with its affordable prices and welcoming atmosphere, offers an ideal setting for a day excursion.

During our visit to Beccles, the town exuded a cheerful ambiance, possibly influenced by the sunny spring weather. Residents strolled along streets adorned with blossoms, while a busker’s lively rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah filled the air.

With origins tracing back to Elizabethan era, Beccles showcases a blend of architectural wonders, including a Gothic church, Georgian townhouses, and quaint half-timbered structures. This historical charm is concentrated in the town center, perfect for leisurely walks. Independent stores, such as the charming Books & Crannies bookstore, contribute to the town’s allure.

While Beccles frequently features in lists of desirable places to live, it remains reasonably priced, making it an attractive option for visitors exploring the East of England. Properties in Beccles are notably affordable, with listings around £200,000, well below the national average.

Our family opted to stay at the Hippersons Boatyard on the town’s outskirts, offering a variety of accommodation options like glamping, floating homes, and moorings. Surrounded by tranquil waters and lush greenery, the setting provided a serene escape.

Our weekend retreat was Wild Cat Island, a distinctive floating pod showcased on Channel 4’s My Floating Home. Despite its compact appearance, the pod surprised us with spacious interiors, featuring two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a charming terrace overlooking the river. The gentle swaying of the pod added to the relaxing experience.

Exploring the River Waveney on a hired boat, we navigated the serene waters with guidance from the accommodating team. A leisurely cruise presented opportunities to appreciate the river’s natural beauty and encounter local wildlife, all while enjoying a delectable picnic from the nearby Relish café.

To conclude the day, we dined at Oak Fired at the Royal Oak, a converted pub renowned for its authentic Neapolitan pizzas. The welcoming atmosphere, coupled with the delicious pizza offerings, provided a delightful dining experience.

As night fell, we returned to our accommodation, basking in the peaceful ambiance of the riverside before retiring for the night, lulled to sleep by the gentle river currents.
