Montenegro, a stunning European country boasting beautiful coastlines and affordable £2 beers, emerges as a hidden gem outside the Schengen area, bypassing the EU’s Entry/Exit System complexities that have plagued British travelers to Europe.

The European Union’s (EU) Entry/Exit System (EES) implementation has led to significant travel disruptions for UK tourists heading to Europe. Long queues, up to four hours in some cases, and missed flights have become common as travelers grapple with the new digital border system.

In light of the chaos caused by the EES, many Brits are exploring alternative destinations to avoid the hassles altogether. Montenegro, a picturesque country located between the Adriatic Sea, Croatia, and Albania, stands out as a less-visited European treasure. Its striking landscapes of rugged mountains, canyons, and pristine Adriatic coastline draw comparisons to Croatia but without the crowds.

Montenegro’s coastal town of Budva is a popular destination, renowned for its expansive golden beaches, clear turquoise waters, vibrant nightlife, and historic Old Town charm. The capital, Podgorica, offers lush green spaces, impressive architecture, and a lively café culture.

Another highlight is Tivat, a coastal town exuding a ‘Monaco-style’ ambiance with a scenic marina that hosts luxurious yachts against a backdrop of rugged mountains. Travelers have praised its beauty and the upscale amenities available.

Moreover, Montenegro is budget-friendly compared to Western European countries like Croatia. Local beers such as Nikšićko and Pivo cost around £2-3, while a bus ride averages £5-8 for an hour’s journey.

Visitors often rave about the affordable dining options, with some meals priced at just £10. Accommodation choices are plentiful and budget-friendly, ranging from beach resorts to mountain chalets, offering a variety of experiences against the country’s stunning landscapes.

Several low-cost airlines, including Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, and Wizz Air, operate flights to Montenegro from various UK airports. Direct one-way flights from Manchester to Tivat start from £29, while flights from London Gatwick to Podgorica begin at a mere £17, making it a convenient and affordable travel option.

British citizens traveling to Montenegro can stay visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, family visits, business meetings, cultural events, short-term studies, or training. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises ensuring passport stamps on entry and exit for compliance.

For additional travel guidance on Montenegro, visitors can refer to the Foreign Office website for detailed information and updates on entry requirements and regulations.
