Sky users are set to experience a new feature called Real Time starting tomorrow, just in time for the World Cup kickoff. This upgrade aims to reduce the streaming delay that many viewers currently encounter, particularly during live sports events. Traditionally, services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX have had a delay of up to 40 seconds compared to standard broadcasts, causing potential spoilers for viewers. Real Time, which was initially introduced for Premier League matches in 2024, is now expanding to include BBC and ITV coverage, enhancing the viewing experience for major events like the World Cup.

According to a statement from Sky, the Real Time feature is powered by Sky OS and is designed to minimize the lag between live action and on-screen display, providing a more immediate viewing experience for sports enthusiasts. To activate Real Time during supported live sports broadcasts, viewers can select the Real Time option on their Sky Glass or Sky Stream devices. The feature can be accessed via an opt-in button or dedicated channels such as BBC One HD RT, ITV1 HD RT, and ITV4 HD RT.

Sky’s shift towards internet-based services like Sky Glass and Sky Stream signifies a departure from the traditional satellite-based Sky Q platform. These new services operate over broadband, offering advantages such as easy self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+. As Sky focuses on internet-delivered television and improved streaming experiences, Sky Glass and Sky Stream remain central to the company’s strategy.

The introduction of Real Time and the transition to internet-based services highlight Sky’s commitment to enhancing the viewing experience for its customers and adapting to the evolving landscape of streaming technology.
