A major airline is planning to cancel over 500 flights in the upcoming weeks due to mandatory maintenance on its aircraft. Aer Lingus announced the cancellations, affecting departures from Dublin, Shannon, and Cork airports in Ireland. Flights to various European destinations such as Berlin, Zurich, Athens, Faro, and Amsterdam will be impacted, along with routes to London Heathrow, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. Passengers are set to be rebooked on alternative services.

Transatlantic flights to and from Seattle, San Francisco, Minneapolis-St Paul, and Toronto will also face disruptions. An Aer Lingus spokesperson mentioned that recent cancellations were necessary for aircraft maintenance and some schedule adjustments. The majority of affected customers will be accommodated on the same day.

The airline’s decision comes amid concerns about Europe’s jet fuel supply, with the International Energy Agency warning of a significant energy crisis caused by disruptions in essential supplies. This situation could lead to higher fuel and electricity prices globally. The ongoing issues in the oil supply chain, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, are expected to have profound implications for the economy.

Ryanair’s chief, Michael O’Leary, also expressed worries about potential flight cancellations this summer due to the escalating jet fuel costs. He suggested that blame should be directed at external factors rather than the airlines. These developments signal a challenging period for the aviation industry, with uncertainties surrounding fuel availability and economic impacts.
