The United States has experienced a significant drop in tourism numbers, partly due to stricter immigration policies and global tensions during Donald Trump’s presidency. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, it remains uncertain if soccer enthusiasts will help boost visitor figures.

For years, the US has been a top vacation spot worldwide, drawing tourists to attractions like Disney World and Times Square. However, China is poised to surpass the US as the leading tourism economy in the coming years, as reported by Bloomberg news agency.

The Chinese travel and tourism sector expanded by 9.9% last year, outpacing growth in the US. Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council, stated that if both countries maintain similar growth rates, China could become the world’s largest tourism economy by the end of the decade.

Guevara highlighted the rapid rise of China compared to the shrinking US tourism industry, projecting a potential convergence within the next few years. The upcoming FIFA World Cup, scheduled to start in June, might offer a chance for an uptick in US tourism, although concerns linger within the industry.

Factors such as currency fluctuations and the Trump administration’s policies, especially on immigration, have dissuaded travelers, notably Canadians who constitute a significant source of foreign tourists to the US. Canadian visits to the US dropped by nearly 30% in 2025, with declines also seen from Australia, India, and Western Europe.

Residents of Lewiston, New York, bordering Canada, heavily rely on Canadian tourists, but many have reported a decline in visitors. Some expressed frustration over the changing dynamics leading to reduced cross-border travel.

With 75% of the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches set to be played in the US, there is hope within the tourism sector for a boost in visits and revenue. However, concerns persist regarding potential impacts of Trump’s foreign policies on tourism, including new visa fees and enhanced screening measures, leading to calls for boycotting the US.

While former FIFA President Sepp Blatter advised fans to avoid attending the World Cup in the US, bookings for flights and accommodations have increased following the announcement of game dates and locations in December. The industry is cautiously optimistic about a potential recovery in tourism numbers in 2026.
