Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander’s vehicle had to be towed away after encountering a pothole described as resembling a lunar crater. The incident occurred while she was driving her Mini Cooper on the B4437 near Burford in Oxfordshire on her way back to her Swindon South constituency from a Labour fundraising event.

Images captured the green car being loaded onto an AA recovery truck following the mishap. Reflecting on the event, Alexander humorously compared the pothole to a crater seen by astronauts during their mission around the Moon.

Expressing frustration over the incident, Alexander highlighted the financial burden and inconvenience it caused, emphasizing that many individuals across the country face similar challenges. Oxfordshire has received £34 million specifically aimed at addressing pothole issues this year.

Recent estimates reveal that the cost of repairing local roads affected by potholes in England and Wales has surged to a record-breaking £18.6 billion. The Department for Transport has cautioned English councils that they risk losing a significant portion of funding for pothole repairs unless they can demonstrate effective utilization of resources.

A substantial portion of the £1.6 billion allocated for local road maintenance in the 2026/27 fiscal year is contingent upon authorities proving their judicious spending. Alexander has previously vowed to combat the pothole problem and enhance road infrastructure. In an opinion piece for LBC, she emphasized the daily challenges faced by drivers and cyclists due to poor road conditions and reiterated her commitment to addressing these issues.
