Santiago de Compostela Airport in northwest Spain has announced a temporary closure for maintenance, leading to the cancellation of all flights from April 23 to May 27. The closure will affect several airlines, including Vueling, Ryanair, Iberia, and British Airways, which serve popular destinations like Barcelona and Madrid.

Approximately 4,500 British travelers could face disruptions as the airport usually accommodates 30 weekly flights from Stansted, Gatwick, and Heathrow. Aena, the airport operator, stated that the closure is necessary for runway resurfacing works and advised passengers to contact their airlines for flight status updates or rebooking.

During the closure period, passengers planning to visit Santiago de Compostela can consider flying to alternative airports in the region. A Coruña Airport, located around 42 miles north, offers daily flights to and from London Heathrow by British Airways, Iberia, or Vueling. Alternatively, Vigo Airport, approximately 61 miles south of Santiago de Compostela, is another viable option.

Santiago de Compostela, known for its historic architecture and as the endpoint of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the capital of Galicia in northwest Spain.
