Travel experts have shared advice on handling airport parking reservations in case of flight cancellations. Airport parking costs can be significant for travelers, with some spending nearly £200 for a four-day stay. While prebooking parking or opting for more distant lots with shuttle services can save money, availability may be limited during peak travel times, leading to higher expenses for closer parking options. Data from Confused.com indicates that short-stay parking at UK airports averages £93.90 for four days, while long-stay parking costs approximately £59 for the same duration.

Meet-and-greet services, which can cost around £101 on average, offer convenience but come at a premium. Some travelers may end up paying up to £189 for short-stay parking over a four-day period, translating to £47 per day. In the event of a flight cancellation, Confused.com experts advise on the steps to take for obtaining a parking refund.

Unfortunately, if a flight is canceled after parking, travelers may still be charged for the entire booked duration. Extending the parking stay due to flight rescheduling could result in additional charges, and rebooking for a different departure date may entail paying twice. Airport parking fees are not automatically adjusted or paused for flight delays, with many UK airports charging additional fees per hour or day beyond the original booking.

To increase the chances of receiving a refund, Confused.com recommends exploring alternatives like carpooling or drop-offs by friends or family instead of relying solely on airport parking. Travelers are encouraged to prepare for potential delays and cancellations, especially during busy travel periods such as Easter and summer holidays. Having travel insurance is essential, as many policies cover disruptions like flight cancellations.

Confused.com has introduced an airport journey planner to assist travelers in avoiding expensive parking fees. The tool compares local taxi prices with airport parking costs to help find more budget-friendly options.
