Keir Starmer has reiterated his stance to Donald Trump, stating that attempts to involve Britain in the Iran conflict will not sway him. The US President recently suggested that the UK and its allies should take action to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz, even hinting at the possibility of walking away from the crisis without a peace agreement with Iran.

During a press briefing this morning, Mr. Starmer emphasized that the UK’s response to the situation will have lasting implications. He mentioned plans to strengthen ties with Europe and announced that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will lead a meeting with 35 allies to discuss strategies for reopening the Strait, which may involve military measures.

Mr. Starmer urged the public to share their views on the government’s handling of the crisis. He emphasized the prolonged nature of the conflict in the Middle East and reassured the British people that the country is well-equipped to weather the storm and emerge stronger and more secure.

Regarding economic support, the government is considering aid packages, having allocated over £50 million to assist households reliant on oil heating. While a decision on fuel duty increase in September is pending, targeted aid for the most affected households is under review.

When asked about Trump’s recent comments on potentially leaving the NATO alliance, Mr. Starmer affirmed the UK’s commitment to the alliance. He stressed the importance of NATO in ensuring security and stated that the UK will act in its national interest, emphasizing that the conflict in the Middle East is not Britain’s and that the country will not be dragged into it.
